For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for conformation. So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled from refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. Hebrews 6:16-18. God’s oath bound promise was not only for Abraham but for all who follow in his footsteps. God’s unchanging, purpose was to bless the world through the seed of Abraham; the meaning of this was revealed in the gospel. The unchanging promise God conveyed to Abraham and the oath that confirmed it raising it above all uncertainty or distrust. The oath confirms that the promise was indeed the purpose of God.
