Daily Word

As it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” “Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, and the way of peace they have not known.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” Romans 3:10-18. The biblical text taken together, stress the universal reign of sin and the consequent depravity and condemnation of mankind. Meditate on this today and be reminded of the depths of His grace in your life.

Daily Word

But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way). By no means? For then how could God judge the world? But if through my lie God’s truth abounds to His glory, why am I still being condemned as a sinner? And why not do evil that good may come? – as some people slanderously charge us with saying. Their condemnation is just. Romans 3:5-8. God is going to judge the world and His judgment will be fair. If God somehow accepts the unrighteousness that is an occasion for His mercy, should He not welcome even more acts of unrighteousness from us? This conclusion is foolish. The ends do NOT justify the means.

Weekend Quote

God hides nothing. His very work from the beginning is revelation – a casting aside of veil after veil, a showing unto men truth after truth. ~ George MacDonald

Daily Word

For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or excuse them on that day when, according to the gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus. Romans 2:14-16. No one can be justified on the basis of personal righteousness, but the universal presence of moral standards, and the common sense of obligation to such standards, indicate a universal moral constitution and sense of accountability to God. This is evidenced by the fact that “their conscience also bears witness”. What is your conscience bearing witness to in your life regarding sin or servant hood?

Daily Word

For all who have sinned without the law will also perish without the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. Romans 2: 12-13. The Mosaic Law already reveals God’s condemnation of sin, but the cause of sin lies in our hearts, that is, deeply rooted in our natures, not in the law. Since God judges people in accordance with standards known to them, a defense based on ignorance of the Mosaic Law is irrelevant and illegitimate. It is not the degree of revelation received, but the response to the revelation itself, however received, that will prove critical on the day God will judge.

Daily Word

There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, but glory and honor and peace for everyone who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality. Romans 2:9-11. Paul teaches that while salvation is by grace, judgment is according to works. Apart from grace, there is only one verdict possible to the Jew first and also the Greek. Right standing with God is not on the basis of ethnic background, nor any natural or self-generated distinctions among humanity. Upon reflection of your daily walk does the scale lean more towards tribulation and distress or glory, honor, and peace?

Daily Word

He will render each one according to his works: to those who in patience in well doing seek for the glory and honor and immortality, He will give eternal life; but for those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, there will be wrath and furry. Romans 2:6-8. Divine judgment is based on every aspect of a person’s relationship to God. Only those who receive grace do in fact seek “glory and immortality”. Others are self-seeking not God honoring. In your daily walk which direction do your actions lead self-seeking or God honoring?

Daily Word

Or do you presume on the riches of His kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment is revealed. Romans 2:4-5. Many today (believer & non-believer) refuse to acknowledge that the kindness of God is intended to produce sorrow for sin and a turning away from it. They despise this purpose of divine generosity, and thereby show distain for God himself. Religious presumption comes from a hard heart, since continued resistance to God’s purposes in showing grace is a refusal to God’s will, and increases guilt while protesting innocence. Wrath is stored up, pointing forward to proportionate punishment in hell. Repent and acknowledge your thankfulness.

Weekend Quote

Our nature hungers for God even when it broke with Him long ago, perhaps the more intensely the longer ago it was. It experiences a sort of famine. But the devil rides it and spurs it on, to distract it from its own need. He changes its hunger into haste. That is why people today are in such a hurry. Their speed is to distract their hunger. ~ Louis Evely

Weekend Quote

To adore God in truth is to admit that our nature is just the opposite of His. Yet, He is willing to make us like Him, if we desire it. Who would be so rash as to neglect, even for a moment, the respect, the love, the service, and the continual adoration that we owe Him? ~ Brother Lawrence

Daily Word

Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. Romans 2:1-3. Paul unmasks those who will agree with His exposition of divine wrath on sin but assume they are immune to it. Their judgment of others is also in effect a self-condemnation. What judgment on others are you passing while failing to recognize the condemnation in yourself?

Daily Word

They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God’s decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them. Romans 1:30-32. Paul sees as evidence of the guilt and bondage of sin that the knowledge of divine judgment no longer acts as a restraint, but becomes a spur to further rebellion in the form of encouraging others to sin. As you look over the scriptures posted both yesterday and today, and meditate what area may need work in your walk with Christ; Think about those around you that you have been an encouragement of their sin…Then repent and seek forgiveness!

Daily Word

And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. Romans 1:28-29. We often get upset over those around us who live in the flesh, and are frustrated with the non-believers in our lives. Far too often we forget that they are by nature children of wrath, and sin is what they do. Some can do it better than others, but the greater tragedy lies in those who are not supposed to sin are often more sinful than the sinning sinner who sins! Meditate on the scriptures posted here today and tomorrow and discern what area needs work in your daily walk with Christ.

Daily Word

For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for the error. Romans 1:26-27. The effect of perverting the instinct to worship God is the perversion of other instincts from their proper functions. Scripture views all homosexual actions in this light. Even in a morally fallen and therefore unpredictable world, the harvest reaped is related to the crop sown. Sin brings a disdain for true values, and risks abandonment by God, to a spirit of licentiousness. Sin is sin regardless of what the action maybe…what is perverting your instinct to worship God?

Daily Word

Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Romans 1:24-25. God’s judgment involves the removal of divine restraints, both on sinful actions and on their consequences. Lust of any kind brings about impurity. How often do recognize the lust in your heart? Today is a good day for cleansing and renewing the heart before a Holy God.

Weekend Quote

To try and find a common ground between the message of the cross and man’s fallen reason is to try the impossible, and if persisted in must result in an impaired reason, a meaningless cross and a powerless Christianity. ~ A.Z. Tozer

Weekend Quote

One of the reasons we exhibit very little spiritual power is because we are unwilling to accept and experience the fellowship of the savior’s sufferings, which means acceptance of His cross. ~ A.W. Tozer

Daily Word

Claiming to wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Romans 1:22-23. Intellectual arrogance before God displays a reversed sense of values; the worship of God is exchanged for devotion to manmade and man reflecting idols. The indelible instinct to worship is perverted by being centered on the wrong object. Today many are caught up in idol worship of some type…take a few moments throughout today and check yourself…what takes more precedence in your life than God?

Daily Word

For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature have been clearly perceived, ever since, the creation of the world, in things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they new God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Romans 1:20-21. Paul stresses that humanity not only has the opportunity to know God through general revelation, but that the revelation yields real knowledge. Humanity’s sin is the individual refusal to acknowledge what is already known to be true. The consequence of rejecting God was that their hearts and minds grew dark. Understand that there are no excuses for either the believer or non-believer when one refuses to acknowledge truth. Recognize you’re need to give Him honor and thanks today and every day.

Daily Word

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. Romans 1:18-19. Wrath is the divine judge’s righteous retribution and personal revulsion evoked by moral evil. God’s judgment is not limited to the future; His antagonism to sin is already shown in the world, and its effects are visible today. It is not that the truth cannot be found, rather that when confronted with the truth, fallen humanity hinders and obstructs its influences and is therefore without excuse. The invisible God is revealed through the visible medium of creation. What truth’s are you hindering and suppressing making you without excuse? Understand today His wrath is justice.

Daily Word

For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “the righteous shall live by faith.” Romans 1:16-17. Although the gospel is folly to the cultured, Paul sees his message as divine wisdom, and is not embarrassed by God’s way of salvation. The regenerating, life changing impact of the gospel word through the Holy Spirit is essential because of humanity’s bondage to sin and Satan, and weakness, and spiritual inability on account of sin. Salvation is unmerited, but it is not universally enjoyed; faith is required for it. What is demonstrated most in your life to others; the power of the gospel or reluctance?

Daily Quote

For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of His son, that without ceasing I mention you always in my prayers, asking that somehow by God’s will I may succeed in coming to you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you – That is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine. Romans 1:9-12. Paul’s constant prayerfulness is an expression of his wholehearted service and desire for spiritual usefulness. He prays in full submission to God’s will. Ministry is for mutual strengthening of the whole body. Look for opportunities to strengthen others today.

Weekend Quote

When in His mercy God leads a soul in the higher paths of sanctification, He begins by stripping it of all self-confidence, and to this end He allows our own schemes to fail, our judgment to mislead us. We grope and totter and make countless mistakes until we learn to mistrust ourselves and to put all our confidence in Him. ~ Jean Nicholas Grou

A proud man is always looking down on things and people; and, of course as long as you’re looking down, you can’t see something that is above you. ~ C.S. Lewis

Daily Word

And was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by His resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among nations, including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ. Romans 1:4-6. Paul sees Christ as the author of his salvation and also of his calling to be an evangelist to the Gentiles. Obedience to faith is obedience that flows from faith and the fact that faith implies obedient submission to the call of God. Does your daily walk demonstrate the implications between you’re faith and obedience to Christ and His Word?

Daily Word

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which he promised beforehand through His prophets in the Holy Scriptures, concerning his son, who was descended from David according to the flesh. Romans 1:1-2. The gospel was announced in promise form in the biblically recorded preaching of the prophets, from which the apostolic presentation of the gospel is drawn. God is both the source and theme of the message; it is the message “of God”. To be a servant is to be totally at the disposal of a master. Do others recognize YOU as a servant of God?

Daily Word

And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. Galatians 6:9. Paul’s point is that the believer’s entire life provides the unique privilege by which we can serve others in Christ’s name. Our love for fellow Christians is the primary test of our love for God. Often times it not so much what you do outside the fellowship as it is what you do for those inside the fellowship that has greater value in the kingdom of God. Are you passing or failing you’re tests?

Daily Word

Do not be deceived; God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the spirit will from the spirit reap eternal life. Galatians 6:7-8. As the farmer carefully plans and executes the tasks needed in preparing and planting his crop; he recognizes that whatever he does will greatly affect it’s outcome. So must we recognize that whatever we do in word and deed also has an effect in our spiritual walk daily and ultimately eternally! Are you more Kingdom minded or earthly minded?

Monday, July 2, 2012

Daily Word

For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not his neighbor. Galatians 6:3-4. Paul urges the Galatians Christians to examine themselves as individuals before God, rather than drawing false confidence from relative comparisons with others. Paul also makes clear that “boasting” is not to be found in obedience to the law, rather in the cross of Christ alone. Whom have you been comparing yourself to, and of whom do you boast most about?

A saint is a creature of vast possibilities, knit into shape by the ruling personality of God. ~ Oswald Chambers
