The Greek word is more graphic; it means “refuse” and was once translated as “dung”. Paul flings away in disgust whatever interferes with “the surpassing knowing of Christ.” How different would your relationship with Christ be today if you were to thoroughly take account and rid yourself of all the unnecessary interference in “knowing Christ” more deeply?
