Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother. I know and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus that nothing is unclean in itself, but it is unclean for everyone who thinks it unclean. For if your brother is grieved by what you eat, you are no longer walking in love. By what you eat do not destroy the for whom Christ died. Romans 14:13-15.
In the context of Jewish faith, “destroy” means to cut off from the covenant community. To encourage behavior that weak believers’ consciences forbid is to encourage them to go against their conscience, a serious and dangerous act. We have only to look at the world around us, and our selves in every day life to fully grasp this. How many times a day does the world and the flesh battle with you to go against your conscience? Has it at times proven itself to be a serious and sometimes dangerous act?
